PHARE PROGRAM

One of the most important resources for life is potable water but on Karst, where we live, we do not realize enought this. The consequences are polluted caves which represent source of pollution of potable water.
With help from Phare project, under the name of"Sanation of polluted caves", have the speleologists of Speleological group of Sežana checked the area of Sežana and Komen Karst. In this area is over 500 known caves and 100 of them are polluted.
To define the pollution more closely, the speleologists took some examples of water and soil from three caves. Those chosen caves were: Jama v Brundlovem partu pri Sežani, Jama pri Godnjah and Governova jama pri Komnu.
The analises showed a worried grade of pollution. The amount of heavy metals, esspecially quick silver, cadmij, zink, lead, copper and Ni are huge. Most probably are the sources of this pollution the industrial garbage and garbage from our households.

Project of sanation of the Karst water - CLEANING THE GARBAGE FROM RAVBAR CAVE (23. - 24. 7. 1998)

Cleaning of the cave was under the protection of the Ministry environment and space and the busines sistem of Helios from Domžale. There were 21 speleologists who carried out of Ravbar cave 50 cubic meters of different garbage. Of this mostly white techincs and cars. This garbage was carried on refuse dump with help of Komunala Sežana, and lifted out of cave with help of an elevator from BTC Terminal Sežana.

Program Phare - Sanation of polluted caves - TIMAV/KARST PARK (june - september 1998)

With help of Phare project the speleologists of Speleological group of Sežana checked the area of Sežana and Komen Karst and with the results made a list of twenty polluted caves with the structure of garbage. On black deposits, which derive from times when here were no organisated refuse dumps, prevail communal and industrial garbage and carrions. To get a better picture of pollution in caves we took some samples of water and soil from three chosen caves (Jama v Brundlovem partu pri Sežani, Jama pri Godnjah, Governova jama pri Komnu). The analises have shown a huge amount of heavy metal such as quick silver, cadmij, zink, lead, copper and Ni.

In the project, which took part from june to september, collaborated 6 members of our club and an expert (Vlasta Kukanja, dipl.biol.), who made analises of water and soil.

Program Phare - ELECTRIFICATION OF CAVE VILENICA (year 1998)

Project of electrification made possible safer visits of cave and with this helped in quality of spreading knowledge about Karst and karsical phenomena. It included electronics and telekomunications which made the working of electric conduit safer and more reliable in the oldest turistic cave in Europe - Vilenica.

We had a cooperation within many experts on different fields and the rest of members of our group (7). The leader was Fabjan Edi, dipl.el.ing.

Program Phare - CAVES IN RIVER BASIN OF RIVER REKA - IL TIMAVO (year 1999 and 2000)

In this two years we carried out several projects:

- explorations of caves on supposed stream of river Reka

- analises of Reka`s water in Kačna cave and Labodnica and comparison with water of river Reka from Škocjan cave and from the springs of Timav.

- checking the deposits and researching some special cave bugs(Coleoptera Anophthalmus)

To make some phizi-chemical analises of underground water we reach the underground stream of river Reka in caves Kačna cave (Žabje jezero) and Labodnica (dno jame).

Conclusions:

- we discovered a new cave (Gustinčičeva jama v Blažčevi dolini) near Vilenice

- analises of water in river Reka has shown that there is no heavy metal, pesticids, fenols or PBCs in the water and only few nitrats.

- it was discovered a new subspecies of blind cave bug

In this project collaborated 12 to 15 members of our club and several experts (dr. Gams, dr. Turk, g. Pirjevec, representatives of Institution for natural and cultural heritage from Nova Gorica, representative of Administration for protection of nature and mag. Kukanja).

Anophthalmus spectabilis vrhoveci

We made several researches in the area between Sežana and Divača with a purpose to learn some more about biological conditions. One of the results was the discover of a new subspecies of bug Anophthalmus spectabilis. We cought this bug in a trap which was situated in a collapse at the bottom of 200 m deep entrance in Kačna cave. Analises were made by Marco Bognolo from Trieste, who is also a member of our club.

In the memory of a slovenian cave diver Tomo Vrhovc, we named this new subspeciesAnophthalmus spectabilis vrhoveci.
