GROFOVA JAMA

Shelter in First World War

Grofova jama (cave) is to be found on Komen Karst near the village Brestovica. It lies on hill Grmada near the front between Slovenia and Italy. Here took place furious battles in First World War.The two fighting sides was Italy and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The last one have transformed the cave in a shelter for soldiers. They dug out four other galleries and transformed the upper part of the cave in nine platos for beds. This part of cave is today illuminated and open to the visitors. On the bottom the gallery falls in an abyss which tooks you in the lower parts of the cave. Near the cave you can also find many rests of the fortifications, trenches and other shelters from First World War.
